Cypress, fog & the Pacific

A championship that could only be San Francisco.

The fog rolls in off the Pacific most mornings in March, sliding through the Monterey cypress and settling over the fairways before the first group is away. This is municipal golf as San Francisco has always known it — public, walkable, and played in whatever the city sends down off the bridge.

From the bluffs at Lincoln Park, the Golden Gate fills the horizon. At Harding, the cypress lean out over Lake Merced. There is no gate, no invitation — only the draw, the wind, and whoever is willing to walk it.

Cypress-framed fairways bending in the ocean wind, a century of the City walked upon them.

A century of the City

Every major went dark in wartime. This one never did.

Played every single year since 1917 — through two World Wars, earthquakes and pandemics — the City is the oldest consecutively played championship in golf. The Masters, the U.S. Open, the Open Championship and the PGA all paused. It did not.

In 1956, more than ten thousand spectators ringed Harding Park to watch Ken Venturi and Harvie Ward. “Harvie, I’ve come to take my City back,” Venturi said on the first tee — and won 5 & 4, in the match still called the finest municipal golf has known.
